John Hiller is a retired professional baseball player who served as a relief pitcher in the Major League Baseball. Hiller spent his entire major league career playing for the Detroit Tigers and was born in Toronto, Ontario in Canada. Hiller is best known for being able to record a total of 38 saves during the 1973 season and that was after he had a heart attack. In the succeeding season, Hiller was able to win a total of 17 games that he relief pitched for. Hiller, who is a leftie, was ranked seventh in the list of left-handed pitchers by the time of his retirement.
Hiller signed with the Detroit Tigers in 1962 and was assigned to the minors before he was able to join the team in 1965. However, it was only in the 1967 season that Hiller was able to see significant game time. His breakout year was during the 1968 season when he helped the Tigers win the pennant with a 9-6 win-loss record, two saves and an ERA of 2.39.
After suffering from a heart attack in 1971, Hiller was awarded the AL Comeback Player of the Year award and the American League Saves Champion award during the 1973 season.
