Born on September 17, 1960 in Brooklyn, New York, John Franco is a left-handed relief pitcher. He has played for 14 years with the New York Mets.
He grew up in New York City and his father was a sanitation worker. He had studied at Lafayette High School and in St. John’s University. He was first drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers on June 8, 1981 during the fifth round of the amateur draft. France was traded to the Cincinnati Reds for Rafael Landestoy on May 9, 1983. He made his debut with the Reds on April 24, 1984 leading to the acknowledgement of John Franco autographed 424 saves baseball. In his stay with the Reds, he was a very successful closer where he was able to win the National League Rolaids Relief Man of the Year Award in 1998 and made the John Franco autographed 424 saves baseball a valuable item. He was 21 years of age when he was traded to the New York Mets for Randy Myers and Kip Gross. Franco successfully won the Rolaids Relief Award in 1990 with the Mets. He also became the team captain and remained the closer up to 1999.
Franco signed a one-year contract for the 2004 season after he missed the 2002 season where he suffered from injuries. In that season, he was able to accomplish a 2-7 record with 36 powerful strikeouts and a 5.28 ERA all in 46 innings. It was on January 2005 when he signed a one-year contract with the Astros.
