John Leonard Hopp was a former professional baseball player who appeared in the Major Baseball League. He was born on July 18, 1916 in Hastings, Nebraska. He played as an outfielder and a first baseman for the St. Louis Cardinals. The Cardinals drafted him in 1939 and signed him to be included in the team’s roster. He played his very first Major League Baseball game on September 18, 1939 for the Cardinals. He was a left-handed batter and thrower who also played for the Boston Braves from 1946 to 1947, the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1949 and the Brooklyn Dodgers in the same year.

Hopp also became part of the New York Yankees from 1950 to 1952 and spent his last few seasons in the major league as a member of the Detroit Tigers. Among his achievements as a major league player were the 1946 National League All-Star selection and the 1943 World Series where he played. He also appeared in a number of World Series Championships which includes the 1942, 1944, 1950 and 1951 games.

He had a career record of 458 runs batted in and 74 home runs. He recorded a batting average of .296 in his entire major league career. He was featured in the Carl Erskine’s Tales from the Dodgers Dugout: Extra Innings book which was released in 2004.
