Joel Edward Horlen is a retired professional baseball player who batted and threw with his right hand. Born on August 14, 1937 in San Antonio, Texas, he was a famous pitcher in Oklahoma State University where he was named to the American Baseball Coach Association All-America Team. He was an integral part of the university’s win in the 1959 College World Series. He started playing in the Major League Baseball in 1959 after being signed by the Chicago White Sox and had his first MLB game on September 4, 1961 against the Minnesota Twins. He was a starting pitcher for the White Sox for the first two seasons of his professional career. He played in the starting rotation and made a 13-9 record and had a 1.88 ERA. He ranked second in the Major Baseball League record pf most number of shutouts in 1965 with 4 and was third in walks per ninth innings with 1.60. Reviews say his best season was in 1967 when he ended with a 19-7 record and 2.06 ERA. He was the second player in the voting for the Cy Young Award in 1966 American League. He also led the American League in number of hits with 14.
In 1972, Horlen joined the Oakland Athletics with which he won the World Series. He played in the Major League Baseball for the last time on October 4, 1972 and ended his MLB career with 1, 065 strikeouts, 3.11 earned run average and 116-117 win-loss record.
