Joe Washington is a former American professional football player. He was born in Crockett, Texas and took his college education at the University of Oklahoma where he was also a stellar during his college football career when he became a two time All-American First-team and finished third in the Heisman Trophy in 1974 and finished fifth in 1975. Throughout his ten season career, Washington played as running back for several teams in the National Football League; the San Diego Chargers, Baltimore Colts, Washington Redskins and the Atlanta Falcons.
Washington began his professional football career after he was drafted by the San Diego Chargers during the 1976 NFL Draft where he was a first round pick of the team. However, a month before the start of the 1978 season, Washington was traded to the Baltimore Colts in exchange for Lydell Mitchell. Washington was with the Colts in 1979 when he made his lone Pro Bowl appearance. Washington’s most memorable performance was on September 18, 1978 when he had a hand in three of the four touchdowns scored by the Colts in their team’s 34–27 victory over the New England Patriots on Monday Night Football.

He played 119 games, starting 53 of those. Born in Crockett, TX on September 24, 1953, Washington stands 5'10 and weighs 179 lbs. He attended college at Oklahoma. He was drafted by the San Diego Chargers in the 1st round (4th overall) of the 1976 NFL Draft.
