About Joe Walcott Memorabilia & Collectibles

Taking his name from his boxing idol Barbados Joe Walcott, Arnold Raymond Cream also known as Jersey Joe Walcott was an American professional boxer. He hails from Merchantville, New Jersey and was born on January 31, 1914. He died at the age of 80 in Camden, New Jersey.

Walcott’s father died when he was 13 so he was forced to quit school and start working in a soup factory. He needed to do this to support his mother and 11 siblings. As he began to work, he also started his training as a boxer.

He began his professional career as a boxer on September 9, 1930 when he faced off with Cowboy Wallace. He won by knockout in the first round, and he reaped five more wins before losing to Henry Wilson in 1933.

He made a record of 45 wins, 11 losses, and 1 draw before he got his first chance to a world title match. He lost to Tiger Jack Fox twice, and once to Abe Simon. He made a comeback in 1945 when he went against and beat top heavyweights including Joe Baksi, Lee Q. Murray, Curtis Sheppard, and Jimmy Bivins. He also lost to Joey Maxim and Elmer Ray in 1946 but got even with the two in 1947.

He fought against Ezzard Charles twice and lost before he got the heavyweight crown at the age of 37. He was then the oldest boxer to ever win the world heavyweight title. He was able to defend his title against Charles once but lost the title to Rocky Marciano in 1952. He tried to get it back in 1953 but unfortunately lost to Marciano.

After his retirement, he went for boxing drama, professional wrestling, and became a referee inside the ring during Muhammad Ali and Sonny Liston’s fight. He became a sheriff at Camden County and worked as chairman of the New Jersey State Athletic Commission from which he retired at the age of 70. He was inducted to the International Boxing Hall of Fame in Canastota.
