A former player in the Major League Baseball and a Hall of Fame athlete, Jim Rice was born as James Edward Rice in Anderson, South Carolina. He spent his entire career in the majors with the Boston Red Sox which drafted him in 1974. His Major League Baseball debut was on August 19, 1974 and from his first game up to his final appearance in the league, he performed excellently. He was named to the All-Star team of the American League for eight seasons and was hailed as the Most Valuable Player in the league in the 1978 season. He set records in the major league including a record for reaching over 400 total bases in the league, a record which was not achieved since the past 19 years. He and Ty Cobb became the two players who have led the major league in number of total bases for three seasons. He was able to record 20 home runs per season eleven times and a batting average of .300 for seven times in his entire MLB career. His remarkable major league career ended with a .502 slugging average and 392 home runs, with 1, 451 runs batted in. He was named in the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2009 for his superb career in the major league.
