Jan Caloun is one of hockey’s unsung greats. Born on December 20, 1972 at Czechoslovakia, he is an example of hockey players that thrive even outside of the big leagues. He started playing hockey in 1992 for Czechoslovakia in the World Juniors and won a bronze medal in the World Championships the following year. He joined the
San Jose Sharks in 12972 but played in the minor league for most of the season. Because of that, he transferred to Europe and aided the Czech Republic in the 1998 Nagano Olympics where they won a gold medal in a game versus Finland. In the year 1999 he also won a gold medal in the 1999 Worlds and decided to stay in Finland. He was swapped by the Sharks for Martin Paroulek of the
Columbus Blue Jackets. He was released on the 28th of November 2000 by the Blue Jackets and signed for HIFK Helsinki as a free agent.

Born in Usti nad Labem, Czechoslovakia on December 20, 1972, Caloun stands 5-10 and weighs 190 lbs. He was drafted by the San Jose Sharks in the 4th round (75th overall) of the 1992 NHL Entry Draft.
