Known as “The Bronx Bull” and “The Raging Bull,” Jake LaMotta is a former boxer who became the world middleweight champion. He was born on July 10, 1921 in Bronx, New York.
He joined the pro boxing in 1941 when he was 19 years of age. LaMotta had won the world title in 1949 against Marcel Cerdan in Detroit leading to the recognition of Jake LaMotta signed Everlast boxing glove. He had met two challengers namely Tiberio Mitri and Laurent Dauthuille was able to beat them. He was then challenged by Robinson during their rivalry’s sixth fight on February 14, 1951. Their fight was known as boxing’s version of The S. Valentine’s Day Massacre. Robinson won through a technical knockout during the 13th round. The fight was stopped when LaMotta was lying on the ropes. It was in 1960 when LaMotta shocked the sports world when he was called to be a witness before a United States Senate sub-committee that was looking at underworld influence on boxing. He said that he had thrown his fight with Billy Fox on 1947 in exchange for a title shot against Cerdan.
When he retired, he bought a few bars and then he became a stage actor and stand up comedian. LaMotta also appeared in 15 motion pictures which includes The Hustler with Paul Newman and Jackie Gleason.
