J.R. Richard is a retired professional baseball player who was has the real name of James Rodney Richard and hails from Vienna, Louisiana. He was a star athlete at Lincoln High School where he played both basketball and baseball. He caught the attention of many college baseball teams but he opted to sign with the Houston Astros and immediately had his professional career.
He started his pro career as a pitcher in the minor leagues like the Florida State University which he joined when he was 20 years old. He showed superb abilities in the field which eventually led to his first Major League Baseball game on September 5, 1971 for the Houston Astros. After a few games in his first seasons in the league, he was sent back to the minors but continually showed improvement and had his regular major league stint in the 1975 season. He then became one of the leading pitchers in the major league and has set records for the highest earned run average and most number of strikeouts. However, a health problem soon affected his performance and led to his final game in the major league on July 14, 1980 for the Astros. He was regarded as one of the great players in the league by many sources.
