Ian Woosnam is a professional English golf player. Woosnam, who goes by the nicknames “Woosie” and “Wee Welshman,” was born in Oswestry, England. Woosnam turned pro in 1976 and was able to taste his first European Tour in 1979. After three modest seasons, Woosnam’s career catapulted in 1982 when he won the Swiss Open against Bill Longmuir.
This 1982 victory was then followed by numerous other tournament victories; such as the 1983 Silk Cut Masters against Bernard Gallacher, the 1984 Scandinavian against Peter Teravainen and the 1986 Lawrence Batley International T.P.C. against Ken Brown and José Maria Cañizares. In 1987, Woosnam won four tournaments in just a single year, namely; the Jersey Open, the Cepsa Madrid Open, the Bell's Scottish Open, and the Trophee Lancome.
The following year, in 1988, Woosnam added even more achievements to his victory list winning three tournaments; the Volvo PGA Championship against Seve Ballesteros of Spain and English compatriot Mark James, the Carroll's Irish Open against Seve Ballesteros and another English golfer Nick Faldo and the Panasonic European Open against Nick Faldo.
Woosnam won another four tournaments at the start of the 90s, winning the Amex Med Open, Torras Monte Carlo Open, Bell's Scottish Open and the Epson Grand Prix of Europe. Because of Woosnam’s numerous achievements in his pro golf career, he was awarded an O.B.E. in the 2007 New Years Honors List. Woosnam currently resides in Jersey.
