About Hoyt Wilhelm Memorabilia & Collectibles
Hoyt Wilhelm is a former American professional baseball player. He was born in Huntersville, North Carolina. Wilhelm graduated from Cornelius High School in Cornelius, North Carolina. He batted and threw with his right and began his pro baseball career in the major league after he signed with the New York Giants and made his debut with the team on April 18, 1952.
Wilhelm also pitched for a number of teams in the major league throughout his twenty season career from 1952 up to 1972. His clubs other than the Giants were the St. Louis Cardinals, Cleveland Indians, Baltimore Orioles, Chicago White Sox, California Angels, Atlanta Braves, Chicago Cubs, Atlanta Braves and the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Wilhelm’s triumph as a reliever helped the gradual change in usage patterns of pitchers. Wilhelm is considered by many as one of the greatest knuckleballers to have played in the Major League Baseball, according to sources. During his first six years in the major league, Wilhelm participated as reliever in 361 games.
In1958 however, the Indians used him intermittently as a starter, and he continued in that dual role following a mid-season trade to the Orioles. Wilhelm retired at age of 50 following his final game on July 10, 1972. He was then inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1985. Hoyt Wilhelm passed away at the age of 80 on August 23, 2002 in Sarasota, Florida.
