About Honus Wagner Memorabilia & Collectibles

The great Ty Cobb himself was quoted saying that Johannes Peter “Honus” Wagner was maybe the greatest star ever to take the diamond. The Flying Dutch was born to German parents on February 24, 1874 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. While they helped their father in the coal mines, Honus and his brothers played sandlot baseball, thus developing their baseball skills.

Honus started his career helping his older brother, Albert Wagner, in his Inter- State League Team. This is where Honus caught the eye of Atlantic League’s Edward Barrow who signed him. Despite doubts about his awkward figure, Honus was signed by the Louisville Colonels through Barrow’s recommendation. He showed great potential in the National League. He showed his hitting skills more when he got to the Pittsburgh Pirates. He went toe to toe with Cy Seymour which he unfortunately lost to the latter.

In 1908, after retirement, he returned to the field and played against the New York Giants and got the batting lead from Mike Donlin and star pitcher Christy Mathewson. Prior to that Honus played in a 1903 World Series game against the Boston Americans. For the first and only time, he competed against Cobb in a 1909 game against the Detroit Tigers. Despite their difference in age, with Cobb being younger, Honus proved to be an effective player by outshining Cobb in the said game. After retirement, he still became active in baseball by working as a coach to the Pirates. In 1936, he was inducted as one of the first 5 members of the Baseball Hall of Fame together with Cobb and Babe Ruth.

Relive the Flying Dutch’s glory days by collecting his framed MLB photos, plaques, and collages, MLB photomints and coins, autographed MLB bats, MLB trading cards and tickets, and game used autographed items. Be your friends’ envy by buying other exciting baseball must haves such as autographed baseballs, autographed MLB jerseys, baseballs, MLB apparel, bobbleheads, figures, original art and prints, autographed MLB helmets and hats, and other items through offers in this website.
