During his High School in Tustin, California, Bell takes part in football, basketball and baseball. He was also hailed as a freshman All-American player in 1997 in Santiago Canyon College where he holds the school record for fewest career walks. Bell’s grandfather also played in the Pirates organization and his cousin Erik Meek played basketball at Duke. Tampa Bay Devil Rays’ choice was Bell during the 69th round of the 1997 amateur draft but his professional career started in 1998 when he signed with the New York Mets being an undrafted free agent. This far-fetched player made his major league debut on August 24, 2004 after working hard with Mets where he pitched two scoreless innings with three strikeouts against his current club, the Padres.
After his fair games with the Mets, Bell was traded with his fellow pitcher Royce Ring to San Diego outfielder Ben Johnson and reliever Jon Adkins on November 15, 2006. The 6’3” tall right-handed appeared in 22 games with the Mets in 2006, allowing 25 runs, 21 earned, in 37 innings. He also had tied a career high with three innings on September 15, 2006 against the Pirates.
