 Harvey Haddix was a professional baseball player in the 1950s to the 1960s. He was a left-handed pitcher and was known by his nickname of “The Kitten”. He played for the longest time for the St. Louis Cardinals and the Pittsburgh Pirates. Haddix was from Ohio and he was signed by the St. Louis Cardinals as an amateur agent in 1947. After playing in the minors for a handful of seasons, he was called to the majors in 1952.

 

 

He would show his true abilities as a pitcher early in his career. In 1953, Haddix had the perfect season with a 20-9 win-loss record, and an earned run average of 3.06. During that singular season, he was also able to pitch 19 complete games and recorded six shutouts.

 

 

Haddix is most famous for pitching an almost perfect game against the Milwaukee Braves who had been in two World Series prior to that season. He was able to retire 36 batters in 12 and 2/3 innings. The Braves went on to win that game with a 1-0 score.

 

 

By the time Haddix retired, he was selected to a total of three All-Star Games (1953-55), was able to win the World Series as a player (1960) and received the Gold Glove Award thrice (1958-60).

Over 14 seasons, he started 285 games, won 136 games, struck out 1575 batters, and had a 3.63 ERA. Born on September 18, 1925 in Medway, OH, Haddix stood 5' 9" and weighed 170 lb. He attended high school. His debut was on August 20, 1952 and he played his final game on August 28, 1965. Over his career, Haddix made $20,000.
