Harry Gant is a former professional racecar driver. His popularity rose after appearing in the NASCAR Winston Cup circuit during the 1980’s and the 1990’s in his #33 Skoal Bandit car. The NASCAR Winston Cup is now known as the Sprint Cup Series. Harry Gant was known for his numerous nicknames including Handsome Harry Gant and The Bandit.
Gant was able to make is professional debut in the Charlotte Motor Speedway in 1973. Riding the #90 Truxmore Industries Ford, Gant came in eleventh. It was in 1981 when he would ride the #33 Skial Bandit Pontiac. He continued to ride the car until the end of his career.
It would take Gant 10 second finishes before finally clinching the trophy in the Winston Cup in April 25, 1982. In 1985, Gant was able to succeed in finishing first in the International Race of Champions. In 1991, Gant earned the distinction of being Mr. September after he was able to win all of the races in that month. He was able to clinch his last Cup at the Champion Spark Plug 400 in 1992.
Gant retired in 1994, although he came out of retirement in 1996 to substitute for Bill Elliott. In April 27, 2006, Gant was elected into the International Motorsports Hall of Fame.
