Born on June 3, 1945 in Joplin, Missouri, Hale S. Irwin is a professional golf player who graduated from University of Colorado at Boulder. In 1967, he bagged the NCAA Division I Championship and after that memorable win, he went to professional golf playing. He started appearing in the PGA Tour in 1971 and since then has 20 wins in the tournament. He won the 1994 MCI Heritage Golf Classic where he defeated Greg Norman and the Piccadilly World Match Play Championships. From 1875 to 1979, Irwin belonged to the top five golf players according to the McCormack’s World Golf Rankings and was the top ten player in the Official World Golf Rankings in 1991.
His first U.S. Open win was against Forrest Fezler in 1974. The next year, he logged another victory in the Atlanta Classic and Western Open, winning against Tom Watson and Bobby Cole, respectively. He also won in the San Antonio Texas Open in 1979 against Miller Barber and recorded his second U.S. Open win in 1981 when he defeated Jerry Pate and Gary Player.
His third and final U.S. Open win was in 1990 against Mike Donald and he likewise recorded a number of wins in other tournaments including the 2007 MasterCard Championships in Hualalai.
In 1992, Irving was inducted to the World Golf Hall of Fame and was ranked as the 19th Greatest Golfer in the magazine Golf Digest.
