American businessman and principal owner of the New York Yankees,
George Steinbrenner is also known as “The Boss.” He was born on July 4, 1930 in Cleveland, Ohio.
Steinbrenner had coached high school basketball and football teams at Aquinas High School. It was on March 1, 1955 when he became an assistant football coach at Northwestern University. Steinbrenner had bought the Cleveland Piper of the National Industrial Basketball league in the year 1960. In the following year, the team had joined the American Basketball League. It was in 1973 when he bought the New York Yankees and the team. Steinbrenner is well-known for his pursuit of high-priced free agents. During his first 23 seasons, Steinbrenner had changed managers 20 times and general managers for 11 times. It was in the 1981World Series when he provided a colorful backdrop to the loss of the New York Yankees of the World Series.
In 2003, he was awarded with The Flying Wedge Award which is one of the highest honors given by the NCAA. Steinbrenner also has a soft spot for professional wrestling and he had written the foreword of the Dusty Rhodes in 2005 autobiography. He was caricatured in the comedy Seinfield when George Costanza had worked with the New York Yankees for a number of seasons.
