Born on June 25, 1887 in New York , George Abbott went to the University of Rochester where he finished his first stage material, Perfectly Harmless. After that, he made his way to Harvard University. Under the guidance of his drama teacher George Pierce Baker, he was able to finish another material, The Head of the Family. He worked as an assistant stage manager during his early career and also acted in several plays. His first big break in the theatre came in 1925 when he wrote The Fall Guy. A Year after that, he directed his first play, Love ‘Em and Leave ‘Em, which he also wrote.
Gene Tierney, a celebrated stage actress worked with Abbott in 1938 in the play What a Life! In The Pajama Game, a play he co-produced with Hal Prince won a Tony Award for Best Musical 1954. In 1965, Abbott chose lyricist and musical director Fred Ebb to work with him in the musical Flora the Red Manace.
