Born on 31st of July 1930 in San Diego, California, Gene Littler is an American golfer and a graduate of San Diego State University. He is also known as “Gene the Machine” because of his smooth rythmical swing. Littler is one of the new breeds of the college- educated golfers who became professional after school.
He played during 1953 United States Walker Cup team, and won in the U.S. Amateur Championship in the same year leading the Gene Littler signed golf ball as a recognition. In 1954, he won a PGA Tour event as an amateur golfer, finished runner up and turned professional later this year. He won four times during 1955 on tour, but the next few years were not favorable for Littler. The great player and instructor Paul Runyan got Littler to adjust his grip and he was back with five more wins in 1959. This recovery got Littler with 29 wins on the PGA tour and also won two tournaments in Japan and Australia.
The Master’s Tournament, PGA Championship and U.S Open was three of the U.S based majors that Littler accumulated. The Senior PGA Tour in the 1980s and 1990s had given him the great oppurtunity to gain eight wins making the Gene Littler signed golf ball a treasured item. He was even voted the Bob Jones Award by the United States Golf Association and was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in during these times.
