About Gene Fullmer Memorabilia & Collectibles
Gene Fullmer is a retired professional boxer. He was born in West Jordan, Utah and started his boxing career in 1951 when he won his first fight by knockout. In January 2, 1957, he became the world middleweight champion after he bested Sugar Ray Robinson after boxing for the entire 15 rounds of the match. Robinson and Fullmer had a rematch in Match 1 of that same year. Although Fullmer displayed extraordinary strength, he was knocked up by a perfect hook from Robinson during the fifth round.
Robinson would not be able to retain his middleweight championship title for long. The National Boxing Association revoked their recognition of Robinson as the middleweight champion in 1959. The open title was to be filled up in a match between Fullmer and Carmen Basilio. Fullmer managed to win the August fight with a technical knockout in the fourteenth round. He held the title until October 1962 when he was defeated by Dick Tiger. He sought a rematch in February and August 1963 but eventually let go of any aspirations to regain the title after he was knocked out by Tiger during the seventh round of the August rematch.
By the end of his career, Fullmer had 55 wins including 24 knockouts, 6 losses and 3 draws.
