Gene Elston is a former broadcaster in Major League Baseball. He started as an announcer for high school basketball in 1941. He then went on to minor league baseball starting in 1946 and 8 years later, he had his first job in the major league. He was then the number two radio announcer for the Chicago Cubs. In 1958, he progressed to a national radio audience in the “Game of the Day” with
Bob Feller on the Mutual Broadcasting System. Elston joined the famous radio broadcaster Loel Passe to announce the Houston Buffs’ final season in 1961. In 1962, the team called Houston Colt 45s was inaugurated and was known as the Astros 3 years later. Elston was the team’s main announcer until 1986. Gene Elston retired from broadcasting in 1997. In 2006, at the age of 84, he was given the annual
Ford C. Frick Award from the Baseball Hall of Fame for his major contributions to the game. The Astros’ current announcer for home games is
Milo Hamilton.
