Born on September 15, 1938 in Williamston, North Carolina, Gaylord Perry is a former right-handed pitcher and a member of the Baseball Hall of Fame.
Perry had been notorious for doctoring baseball specifically throwing a spitball but he won 314 games over a 22 – year career starting in 1962. A five time All-Star player, he was the first pitcher to win the Cy Young Award in each league against the Cleveland Indians in 1972 and against the San Diego Padres in 1978. He is also famous for being the second-winningest brother combination with his brother Jim in baseball history second to the knuckleballing, Niekro brothers, Phil and Joe. While pitching for Seattle Mariners, he became the fifteenth member of the 300-win club for pitchers after defeating the New York Yankees on May 6, 1982. He then became the third pitcher to surpass longtime strikeout king Walter Johnson’s record of 3,509 strikeouts on 1983 leading to the recognition of Gaylord Perry signed MLB baseball w/HOF'91 as a cool item.
Like most pitchers, he was not prominent for his hitting ability and is said to have joked, “They’ll put a man on the moon before I hit a homerun.” And on July 20, 1969, Perry hit the first homerun of his career just minutes after the Apollo 11 spacecraft landed on the moon carrying Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin. He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1991 and was nominated as a finalist for the Major League Baseball All-Century Team despite his admission of illegal pitches.
