Fredi Jesus Gonzalez was born on January 28, 1964 in Havana, Cuba bur he grew up in Miami, Florida. He is a professional baseball player who was selected by New York Yankees in the 1982 Amateur Draft. He played for the Yankees for six years. In 1990, he started to hold managerial positions and his first team was the Miami Miracle of Florida State League. He worked with the team until 1991 and worked with Florida Marlins in 1992. He trained the first Marlins possible players drafted to a minor league team, the Erie Sailors. He also managed Marlins’ AA Eastern League Affiliate, Portland Sea Dogs and helped the team finish first in the Northern Division of the Eastern League. In 1999 and 2000, he became third base coach for the big league club.
He became Florida Marlins manager on October 3, 2006 after the organization fired Joe Girardi. He was also chosen to coach the 2007 National League All-Star Team. He replaced Willie Randolphwho had a surgery. In 2010, he made Florida Marlins win over St. Louis Cardinals, giving him a record of most number of wins in the history of Marlins.
Among the recognitions he received as a manager is the 2008 The Sporting News Manager of the Year award.
