Born on June 2, 1989 in Tema, Ghana, Freddy Adu is a versatile Ghanaian-American football player of the Real Salt Lake in Major League Soccer. He was 14 years of age when he became the youngest professional athlete in modern American team sports.
He joined the IMG Soccer Academy in Bradenton, Florida when he was 12 years old. He then made his professional Major League Soccer debut in 2004 when he was 14 years old. He appeared in the United’s first game of the 2004 season on April 3 where they played against the San Jose Earthquakes. He was 14 when he scored his first ever professional goal in the 75th minute of 3-2 record in a game against the MetroStars. Adu was then assigned as a starting midfielder in the 2006 season. He was also selected to take spot kicks in the DC United’s two penalty shootouts.
