Born on June 2, 1989 in Tema, Ghana, Freddy Adu is a versatile Ghanaian-American football player of the Real Salt Lake in Major League Soccer. He was 14 years of age when he became the youngest professional athlete in modern American team sports.

 

He joined the IMG Soccer Academy in Bradenton, Florida when he was 12 years old. He then made his professional Major League Soccer debut in 2004 when he was 14 years old. Adu played for the United States Under-20 national team. In 2003, he had played for the United States in three tournaments namely the FIFA U-17 World Championship, 2003 FIFA World Youth Championship, and the 2005 World Youth Championship leading the recognition of Freddy Adu signed DC United Nike soccer jersey. It was on November 2003 when he was assigned by the MLS to D.C. United for him to play close to home. He then became the first player who was chosen in such draft.

 

He appeared in the United’s first game of the 2004 season on April 3 where they played against the San Jose Earthquakes. He was also selected to take spot kicks in the DC United’s two penalty shootouts.
