Born in Bayville, New York on August 14, 1959, Brickowski stands 6-9 and weighs 240 lbs. He attended high school at Locust Valley in Locust Valley, New York and college at Pennsylvania State University. He was drafted by the New York Knickerbockers in the 3rd round (11th pick, 57th overall) of the 1981 NBA draft.
