Recorded with five losses, twenty-six wins --- twenty-two were by knock-out over thirty-one fights, Fernando Javier Vargas has retired from his career in boxing. This career started because he earned good records in amateur boxing. Actually, he had been one of the best in the field.
He worked professionally by the year 1997 against Jorge Morales in Oxnard, California where he won through knock-out. A month after, he fought again inside the ring against Claude Staten held at the Convention Center in Atlantic City, New Jersey. This year marked his way to fame in boxing for he was able to fight for several times. After Staten, he fought for titles and won against Burden, Maloney, Lopez, Payne, Quiroga, Fernandez and Martinez within the same year. He continued to win championship by the subsequent year against Conolly, Ellis, Johnson, Stephens, Maciunski, and Campas. He again made history with his continuous victories and was able to protect his title until he lost to a game in Mndalay Bay Resort & Casino, Las Vegas to Felix Trinidad from Puerto Rico. Although after his loss, he was able to win against Rivera and Flores, he lost again to Oscar de la Hoya of the United States.
Until his last two years in boxing, he earned losses to Shane Mosley of the United States for two consecutive times and to Ricardo Mayorga of Nicaragua.
