Francis Thomas “Fay” Vincent, Jr. is a former sports executive who served as the 8th commissioner of Major League Baseball from September 13, 1989 to September 7, 1992. The former entertainment lawyer was born on May 29, 1938 in Waterbury, Connecticut. (U.S.A.)

As a young man, he was already an exceptional athlete. He actively showed his talent in track and field as well as football. He attended The Hotchkiss School, and got into Williams College in 1960 on a full academic scholarship where he graduated with honors, then later went to Yale Law school class 1963. During college, Vincent suffered a serious injury when he jumped from the roof of a four story dorm building. He had a crushed spine and paralyzed legs and spent three months in a form of traction to recover. Despite initial diagnosis that he can never walk again, he recovered though not fully and was forever relegated to the use of a cane to walk. He spent the first few years after graduation as a partner in a Washington, D.C. law firm then worked as an Associate Director of the Division of Corporation Finance of the United States Securities and Exchange Commission.

Prior to serving in the MLB, Vincent worked several other corporate jobs for companies such as Columbia Pictures and Coca- Cola Company. He worked under his longtime friend Bart Giamatti as a deputy commissioner at Giamatti’s request. Upon Giamatti’s death, Vincent became the eighth commissioner of MLB and he went on to preside the World Series and to resolve several issues concerning the league.

After his retirement from baseball, Vincent remained active in the sport by becoming president of the New England Collegiate Baseball League. He also became a private investor and wrote his autobiography.
