Leo Ernest “Ernie” Whitt was born on June 13, 1952 in Detroit, Michigan. He was a former Major League Baseball catcher, and now currently the manager in the Minor League for the Clearwater Threshers. Ernie spent 12 years playing for the Toronto Blue Jays.
Whitt was selected by the Boston Red Sox in the 15th round of the 1972 amateur draft. He made his Major League debut on September 12, 1976. He spent most of his time playing in the Minor League. When Blue Jays manager Roy Hartsfield departed in the 1980 season, Ernie was called and became one of the role players in the team under the new manager Bobby Mattick. During the 1980’s, it was the prime of Ernie’s career after putting a productive season. In 1985, he had an average of .245 with 19 home runs, 64 RBI. He had a better season in 1987 wherein he averaged .269, 19 home runs, and 75 RBI which are his career high. He was the greatest catcher in the Blue Jays history.
In 1989, Ernest was traded to the Atlanta Braves in order to make room for the rookies Greg Myers and Pat Borders. After one year with the Braves and almost a half-year season with Baltimore Orioles, Whitt retired at the age of 39 in 1991. From there he became a coach and manager Clearwater Threshers in the Philadelphia Phillies’ in the Minor League.

Ernie Whitt (full name: Leo Ernest Whitt; no nicknames) played catcher from 1976 until 1991 for the Boston Red Sox, Toronto Blue Jays, Atlanta Braves and Baltimore Orioles. He played for the Red Sox in 1976, Jays from 1977 - 1989, Braves in 1990 and Orioles in 1991. Over 15 seasons, he played 1328 games, hit 134 home runs, drove in 447 runs, and stole 22 bases. Born on June 13, 1952 in Detroit, MI, Whitt stands 6' 2" and weighs 200 lb. He attended high school and was drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the 15th round of the 1972 amateur draft.
