Ernest “Ernie” Grunfeld was born on April 24, 1955 in Satu Mare, Romania. He is retired NBA player who started as a player for Maccabiah Games in high school. In college, he went to University of Tennessee where he became popular as a basketball player together with Bernard King, a future NBA player. He set the school record for an all-time highest point with 2, 249 points.
Grunfeld became part of America’s team in the Pan American Games in 1975. The team was able to win the gold medal in the said tournament. According to reviews, his best moment in his basketball career was in 1976 when he led the U.S. team to win the Olympic Games gold medal. He started his professional playing career in 1977 when he was drafted as 11th overall in the 1977 NBA draft. He played for the Milwaukee Bucks during his first two NBA seasons. In 1979, he joined the Kansas City Kings and stayed with them until 1982.
He ranked third in 3-Pt. Field Goal Percentage in 1986 with .426. After that season, he retired from professional playing and became a radio analyst from 1986 to 1989. Currently, he is the General Manager of the NBA team Washington Wizards.
Among his achievements are being inducted to Tennessee Hall of Fame in 1987, to the PSAL Wingate Fund Hall of Fame and to the National Jewish Hall of Fame in 1993.
