Born in Oakville, Ontario Canada, Eric Cairns plays as a defence in the National Hockey League. He was drafted by the New York Rangers in the NHL Entry Draft in 1992. He started playing hockey in the American Hockey League for the Charlotte Checkers. When he was put on waiver, the New York Islanders got him on the 22nd of December 1998. For six seasons he played for the New York Islanders before his contract was not renewed. He then signed for the Florida Panthers as a free agent but was then traded in the middle of the season. HE was not able to play in the 2006-2007 season because of an injury.
He has also been involved in a rivalry against the New York Rangers and New York Islanders particularly in dispute with
Matthew Barnaby, Theo Fleury, Dale Purinton and
Sandy McCarthy. It even led to an invitation in a fight on the 8th of November 2001 when Cairns was challenged by McCarthy to a fight. Amidst all the troubles, Eric Cairns is now a scout for the
