American third baseman in Major League Baseball, Eddie Matthews was born on October 13, 1931 in Texarkana, Texas. He was six years of age when his family decided to move to Santa Barbara, California. It is where he became a star high school player.
It was in 1949 when Mathews was signed by the Boston Braves and he continued to show great power and strength in the sport in their farm system as a left-handed power-hitting third baseman who hit towering home runs. During his rookie season with the Braves, he was able to accomplish 25 home runs which includes three in one game that break the record for rookies. When Mathews moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin he batted for a .302 season average, hit 47 home runs, and rushed for 135 runs. In his nine straight seasons, he was able to hit 30 home runs. His team successfully won the 1957 National League championship.
It was before the 1967 season when he was traded to the Houston Astros. He then became the seventh player to hit 500 career home runs and member of the 500 home run club. He was named to the All-Star team nine times, has hit 512 home runs, played three times in World Series, and rushed in 100 or more runs five times. Mathews was then inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1978. He ranked number 63 on The Sporting News list of Baseball’s Greatest Players in 1999.
