Douglas Lee “Doug” Williams is a former American football quarterback who debuted for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 1978. He is the only African-American to win a Super Bowl as starting quarterback and is very famous for MVP performance in Super Bowl XXII with the Washington Redskins.
Williams attended college at the Grambling State University and soon started his career in football. He was drafted in the 1st round pick 17 of the NFL Draft in 1978. He was a swift player for the Buccaneers from 1978 to 1982. He then transferred to the United States Football League’s The Oklahoma Outlaws. When the team became the Arizona Outlaws, they just missed the playoffs despite Williams’ obvious improvements.
In 1986, Williams returned to the NFL and played for the Washington Redskins and led the team in a game against the Philadelphia Eagles, the Detroit Tigers and the Minnesota Twins. He led the Redskins against the Denver Broncos in winning Super Bowl XXII. His last game in the NFL as a player was in the 1989 season. He retired with 2,507 pass attempts, 1,240 completed pass, 69.4 quarterback rating, 100 touchdowns, and 93 interceptions. He then worked as coach for the Morehouse College in 1997, Northeast High School, and Grambling University in 1998, before finally returning to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as a personnel executive. As of May 2010, Williams works as the general manager of the Norfolk expansion franchise in the United Football League.
