Harold Douglas Harvey, popular as Doug Harvey, is a retired umpire in the Major Baseball League. He was part of the National League from 1962 to 1992. Although he never had any formal schooling for umpire, he was a noteworthy umpire of his time, reviews say. He was the second greatest umpire for the Society for American Baseball Research. He followed Bill Klem who had the top spot. Referee Magazine named him as the 52nd most prominent figures in officiating sports field.
He umpired in not just one but five World Series which include the 1968, 1974, 1981 and 1984 World Series as well as the 1988 World Series. He also worked in All-Star Games in 1963, 1964 and 1971, which totaled to six when he did it again in the All-Star Games in 1977, 1982 and 1992. He worked in the 1972 game of the New York Mets where Roberto Clemente had his 3000th base hit. He was a nine-time National League Championship Series umpire where he worked as a crew chief in three games. He has a total of 4, 670 games which is the third highest number of games officiated in the Major Baseball League at his time.
He was inducted by the Hall of Fame Veterans Committee to the National Baseball Hall of Fame on December 7, 2009. Harvey was the umpire when the San Francisco Giants players Jesus Alou and Matty Alou batted consecutively for the team in 1963.
