Dennis Lee Eckersley is a former American Major League Baseball player. He first pitched for the Cleveland Indians during his Major League Baseball debut in 1975. He was successful as a starter but was even greater as a closer. Eckersley became the first of only two pitchers in Major League history to have both a 20-win season and a 50-save season in a career. The other pitcher to follow his record is John Smoltz.
Dennis Eckersley made it to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2004. He was also famous for being the pitcher who gave up a “walk-off home run” to the injured Kirk Gibson in Game 1 of the 1988 World Series. His last Major League Baseball appearance was in 1998 for the Boston Red Sox where he had teammates such as Pedro Martinez.

About Dennis Eckersley: Dennis Eckersley (full name: Dennis Lee Eckersley; Eck) played pitcher from 1975 until 1998 for the Cleveland Indians, Boston Red Sox, Chicago Cubs, Oakland Athletics and St. Louis Cardinals. He played for the Indians from 1975 - 1977, Red Sox from 1978 - 1998, Cubs from 1984 - 1986, Athletics from 1987 - 1995 and Cardinals from 1996 - 1997. Over 24 seasons, he started 361 games, won 197 games, struck out 2401 batters, and had a 3.50 ERA. Born on October 3, 1954 in Oakland, CA, Eckersley stands 6' 2" and weighs 190 lb. He attended Washington (Fremont, CA) high school and was drafted by the Cleveland Indians in the 3rd round of the 1972 amateur draft. His debut was on April 12, 1975 and he played his final game on September 26, 1998. Over his career, Eckersley made $27,609,778.
