Darrell K Royal is best known for being a retired football coach though he also played American football during his college days. He is from Hollis, Oklahoma and spent his collegiate football career at the University of Oklahoma. He was coached by Bud Wilkinson and established records in games against the Oklahoma A&M and the North Carolina Tar Heels.
Royal worked as an assistant coach for the North Carolina State, University of Tulsa, and Mississippi State and coached Canadian Football League’s Edmonton Eskimos. His first stint as a head coach was in 1954 for the Mississippi State University and then in 1956 moved on to the University of Washington. In December of the same year, he worked as the head coach of the University of Texas and turned their worst record ever to a good mark and led them to a campaign in the 1957 Sugar Bowl. Under Royal’s coaching, the team never had a losing season for 20 years and even won 3 national championship titles, including appearances or wins at 11 Southwest Conference championships and 16 Bowl berths. In 1962, he also worked as athletic director for Texas and retired from coaching in 1976 but remained as director until 1980. He was inducted to the College Football Hall of Fame in 1983. Among his many accolades are 2 Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year, Paul “Bear” Bryant Lifetime Achievement Award, and the Amos Alonzo Stagg Award.
