He had a successful high school baseball career in Harrison High School where he earned a championship in the 1998 season, after he posted 22 home runs, hit .528 and gathered 38 stolen bases. He was also included in a number of first teams like the USA Today and the Baseball America’s All-American selection.
His professional career started in 1998 as a member of the Chicago Cubs, which drafted him in the Major League Baseball amateur draft in that year. His official debut as a pro in the minors was in 1999 when he played for the Midwest League. He had a few other minor league appearances before he finally made his major league first appearance on September 18, 2000 for the Chicago Cubs. He immediately posted his first hit in the majors the following day and wrapped up his first rookie season with two homers and 42 at-bat hits.
Patterson also joined the Baltimore Orioles and the Cincinnati Reds, and signed in 2009 with the Washington Nationals. That year, he also became part of the Milwaukee Brewers and his recent deal was with his current team, the Baltimore Orioles.
