His real name is Cornelius Clifford Floyd. His father is a former marine who worked double shifts at a US Steel plant in Chicago and Floyd has two other siblings.
He had studied at the Thornwood High School in South Holland,, Illinois. He was a three-sport star in baseball, football, and basketball. In these games, he was able to hit .508 with 130 runs batted in during the final two years of his high school career. He was then pursued by the Arizona State University and Stanford but he decided to go to the minor leagues when the Montreal Expos drafted him as the 14th pick during the first round of the 1991 amateur draft. He made his major league debut in 1993 where he played 10 games with the Expos. Floyd was then traded to the Florida Marlins in 1997 for Dustin Hermanson and Joe Orsulak.
Floyd was again traded from the Marlins to the Expos in 2002. Later that year, he was traded to the Boston Red Sox for Sun-Woo Kim and Seung Song. He was then signed by the New York Mets in 2003 where he stayed until he was a free agent in 2006. In 2007, he had recorded a batting average of .279 with 213 home runs, 781 runs batted in, and 147 stolen bases all in his 1,423 games.
