He started his professional baseball career after he was drafted by the Brooklyn Dodgers. Although Fernandez would later be popular for being a shortstop, he would not be able to fill in that position while with the Dodgers which was occupied by Pee Wee Reese.

 

He was later traded to the Philadelphia Phillies where he played as shortstop for two seasons. He was transferred to the Detroit Tigers and stayed on for three seasons before being traded to the New York Mets in 1963.
