About Cap Clark Memorabilia & Collectibles
John Carrol Clark, more famously known as Cap Clark, played for the
Philadelphia Phillies in 1938. He was born on September 19, 1906 in the small town of Snow Camp in North Carolina. In 1927, Clark graduated from the Elon University, home of the Elon Phoenix baseball team, which used to be known as the Elon Fighting Christians. During Clark’s time Elon was only a college among many other colleges, but it has become a well-established University since 2001.
There isn’t much written about what Clark did or where he played after graduating from college, only that eventually, in the year 1938 he played Major League Baseball with the Phillies. He was 32 years old by then, but was able to play fifty- two games in total, twenty-nine of them with him being the starting catcher. Among his teammates were catcher
Bill Atwood and pitcher Al Hollingsworth. It was his first and only year in Major League Baseball, and after playing 150 games and winning 45 of them, his team garnered the eighth position that year- last out of the eight teams in the National League. The team to nab first place were the
Chicago Cubs, who were ahead of the Phillies by 43 games, and the team just in front gaining the seventh place were the
Brooklyn Dodgers, who were ahead of the Phillies by just 24.5 games that year. It was the first of five consecutive seasons that the Phillies finished last.
Clark’s last game was on September 16, 1938. He died at the age of 50 in Fayetteville, North Carolina.
