Robert Calvin Hubbard, born on October 31, 1900, was a former National Football League player who also became a Major League Baseball umpire. Hailed from Keytesville, Missouri, he went to Centenary College in Louisiana where he became a football varsity athlete. He played under the famous coach, Bo McMillin and represented the team from 1922 to 1924. Because of his sensational performance as a college football player, he was named to the Centenary College Athletic Hall of Fame. As a college athlete, he was known to have an incredible speed that helped him perform well as a tight end and a tackle. In 1962, Hubbard was named to the College Football Hall of Fame.
In 1927, he went to play in the National Football League as a member of the New York Giants which he helped win the NFL championship. He demanded trade to the Green Bay Packers because of his lifelong abhor to large cities. In 1934, he became the Texas A&M coach and returned to the field in 1935. He was inducted to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1963.
After his football career, he became an umpire in the Major League Baseball and even became the supervisor of the umpires from 1954 to 1969. He was also named to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1976.
