Byron White, nicknamed “Wheezer,” is a former American professional football player. He was born in Fort Collins, Colorado and took his education when he attended the University of Colorado where he also played college football during which he was an All-American football halfback for the Colorado Buffaloes. During his three season pro career, White played as halfback for two teams in the National Football League; the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Detroit Lions.
He began his pro football career after he was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers during the round one of the 1938 NFL Draft. During his rookie season, White led the league in rushing and became the game's highest-paid player, sources say. White played for a single season with the Steelers. White came back in 1940, this time as a member of the Detroit Lions, playing for two seasons until 1941.
In his three NFL seasons, White played in thirty three games and led the league in rushing yards during the 1938 and 1940 seasons. Also, throughout his entire season appearance, White never failed to play in three All Pro Games in 1938, 1940 and 1941.White was also part of the NFL 1940s All-Decade Team. White passed away at the age of 84 on April 15, 2002.
