A former right handed relief pitcher, Bruce Sutter is the first pitcher to make effective use of the split-finger fastball. He was born on January 8, 1953 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania and was named Howard Bruce Sutter. He is simply one of the sport’s dominant relievers during the late 1970s and early 1980s. He also became the only pitcher to lead the National League in saves five times.

He also became the only pitcher to lead the National League in saves five times.
He had amazingly set a record in 1982 with his powerful 194th save where he surpassed Roy Face’s record. Sutter also performed well during his nine seasons yet it was only Kent Tekulve had made many appearances but then Sutter had saved 133 of the 379 wins of the Chicago Cubs between 1976 and 1980. It was in 1979 when he grabbed the National League’s Cy Young Award playing as the league’s top pitcher. Sutter was also inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown in 2006. Sutter had played for three different teams in 1976 to 1988.
He was chosen first by the Washington Senators but then he decided to study in Old Dominion University and in the next year, he signed as a free agent with the Cubs. He has spent over four seasons in the Cubs but later played on the 1975 Texas League champion Midland Cubs. He officially joined the Chicago Cubs in May 1976 and he traded to St. Louis Cardinals in December 1980. And in1984, he joined the Atlanta Braves.
