Bruce Harper is a retired professional football player in the National Football League. He was a running back and a kick returner for the New York Jets from 1977 all the way to his retirement in 1984. Harper was born in Englewood, New Jersey and attended Kutztown University of Pennsylvania. Harper went to Dwight Morrow High School in Engelwood. He was an undrafted free agent in 1977 when he was signed by the Jets. Currently, Harper holds the record for the most number of kickoff returns in the whole history of the team with 5407 recorded yards.
During his rookie year in the league, Harper was able to lead the league for kick returns in 1977. He also led the league for kick return yards, punt return yards, number of punt returns and all-purpose yards in the same season. In 1978, Harper was able to retain his ranks as well as in the 1979 season. He led the league in long rushes during the 1983 season.
While playing in the league, Harper was both a running back and a kick returner for the New York Jets. For a time, he also played as a punt returner. Harper announced his retirement from playing in the NFL in 1984.
