Ryan also became a member of several Area Code and American Legion teams during his high school days. When he entered college at Lewis-Clark State College, which is a small NAIA school in Lewiston, Idaho, he became one of the promising player of his time and for the season of 2002 he hit safely in 18 straight games and became known as a good defensive infielder.

 

Ryan joined the MLB amateur draft and was chosen in the seventh round (215th overall) by the St. Louis Cardinals in 2003. New Jersey Cardinals in 2003, and was promoted as Cardinals Class A affiliate, the Peoria Chiefs in 2004.
