John Powell is a former Major League Baseball player who spent his professional baseball career in the said league with three different teams. Known as Boog Powell, he first had his baseball stint at the International League where he established top records in home runs for the 1961 season and in 1963 when he hit 25 homers. In 1964, he recorded the highest percentage of slugging with .606 and posted 39 home runs which is his career best. He bagged the Comeback Player of the Year in the American League in 1966 and ended the season with 34 homers, .287 batting average and 109 runs batted in.
He played for the Baltimore Orioles from 1961 to 1974 and helped the team reach the World Series in 1966. He recorded a career best batting average in the 1969 season along with 37 home runs and was named as the Most Valuable Player in the 1970 season of the American League. After that award and before the 1971 season, he was seen on the covers of Sports Illustrated.
Other teams he played for in the Major League Baseball are the Cleveland Indians from 1975 to 1976 and the Los Angeles Dodgers which he signed in 1977. Sources say he had his prime seasons with the Baltimore Orioles.
He retired from professional baseball playing after seventeen seasons on August 31, 1977.
