About Bobby Wanzer Memorabilia & Collectibles

Robert Francis Wanzer is a former basketball player and coach who hail from Brooklyn, New York. He was nick named “Hooks” Wanzer and was born on June 4, 1921. He stands six feet flat and weighs 170 pounds.

He spent his college basketball in Seton Hall University and was picked by the Rochester Royals. He spent his entire professional career with the Royals. Because Bob Davies was an assistant in Seton and a star in the Royals team, he was able to enlist Wanzer to join him in the professional league. The Royals were notably successful from 1947to 1954 and in the 1950- 1951 season, Wanzer helped the Royals capture the National Basketball Association title.

In 1987, Wanzer was elected to the Basketball Hall of Fame. One key achievement in his career is his record of being the first ever player to shoot more than 90% from the free throw line in a season. He was an All- Star five times with the Royals.

Near his retirement, he served as player- coach in the Royals roster for two years. After his retirement and the move of franchise to Cincinnati, Ohio, he continued to coach for another year. The 1957- 1958 Royals team was a strong contender in the NBA but injuries hindered their success. After Maurice Stokes, then Royals star, was declared permanently injured, Wanzer resigned from the coaching early the following season. He then worked as a coach for the St. John Fisher College in New York. He was part of the United States Marine Corps Hall of Fame class 2007.
