Bobby Shantz was a Major League Baseball pitcher of the Philadelphia Athletics. He was named Robert Clayton Shantz. He played for the Kansas City Athletics, New York Yankees, Pittsburgh Pirates, Houston Colt .45’s, St. Louis Cardinals, Chicago Cubs, and Philadelphia Phillies.
Shantz is a lefthander who began his career as a starting pitcher. He had enjoyed his best season in 1952 where he led the American League in 24 wins and he also received the Most Valuable Player Award. Shantz also led the A’s to the team’s last winning season in Philadelphia. He has also amazingly bagged the eight Gold Glove Awards from 1957 t o1964. In the years 1951, 1952, and 1957, Shantz was selected for the All-Star Game. He was chosen in the 1961 MLB Expansion Draft by the Colt .45s from the Pittsburgh Pirates.
He went to the Yankees in a 12-player deal before the 1957 season where he made a great comeback leading the AL with 2.45 ERA while he went 11-5. Shantz also contributed 11 saves to the 1960 pennant winners before he was traded with the Pirates. He saved Game Two for the Yankees. He won the Gold Gloves in the first four years of the award. He has received numerous awards and he showed to the world that he is indeed worthy of the recognitions that he received.
