As a young kid Bob played basketball, baseball and football. He was offered a football scholarship by Purdue University and which he accepted. While gaining his business management degree, he excelled in the sport. He was both a quarterback and a punter for Purdue. His passing skills were honed significantly with the help of his coaches and he led the Boilermakers to a win against Notre Dame after he was able to complete 19 passes of his 22 attempts. While in Purdue, he was named as an All-American for two times and came in second in the voting for the Heisman Trophy. He led the Boilermakers to their first Rose Bowl and helped the team win against USC. In 1984, Griese was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame.
Griese was drafted by the Miami Dolphins stayed with the team for his entire career. He was named into six Pro-Bowls—in 1970-71, 1974-74, 1977-78. He was also part of two AFL All-Star selections—in 1967-68. Griese also clinched the Sammy Baugh Trophy (1966), Jim Thorpe Trophy (1971) and the Bert Bell Award (1977).
