William Charles Virdon is a former American baseball player. A premier defensive outfielder during his days was a manager and later on served as coach to some teams in baseball.
This center fielder that batted left and threw right was born on June 9, 1931 in Hazel Park, Michigan. He was initially signed with the Yankees (but never played for the big league) and as a minor target, he was traded to the Cardinals before the season of 1954. He made his MLB debut for the St. Louis Cardinals on April 2, 1955. He was named National League Rookie of the Year and later traded to Pittsburgh in 1956. He stayed and played for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1956 to 1965 and 1968. He has his World series champion in 1960 and Gold Glove Award in 1962.
After his playing career, he had a long tenure in the major leagues as a manager with the Pirates in 1972-73, New York Yankees in 1974-75, Houston Astros in 1975-1982 and Montreal Expos in 1983-84. He led the Pirates to the National League title in 1972. He was also the American League Manager of the Year in his full season working or the Yankees in 1974. While managing for the Houston Astros, he was named as the National League Manager of the Year in 1980. He has the unusual distinction of having been replaced on 2 separate occasions by the manager he replaced for Montreal Expos, Jim Fanning.
At present, he served as a special outfield instructor for the pirates during spring training and lives in Springfield, Missouri.
